Southwark Irish Pensioners Project has been supporting elderly Irish people in South East London since 1994. We have grown from an afternoon each week in a church hall, to our current Spa Road premises, where we provide a range of fun, creative and therapeutic activities including:
- Yoga and tai chi
- Pottery and painting
- Hairdressing and chiropody
- Irish newspapers and videos
- Monthly tea dances
- Day trips and ‘Back Home’ holidays
- Bingo, pool, darts and board games
Our current premises are large and versatile, but as outreach & advice services grow and new service users join, there is a growing need for a new building with seperate activity spaces, quiet rooms for confidential discussions & counselling sessions and improved security.
Like most charities, funding is a continual problem, with most income only guaranteed for one year at a time and the threat of funding being cut due to the current economic crisis. We are keen to develop new ways of raising money, generating trading income and running fundraising events and will always welcome help and support on this.
We are also extremely proud of our Irish history & culture and welcome any opportunity to raise awareness amongst the wider community about the incredible experiences of our members and the wonderful artist, musical & other achivements of the Irish.
